Trumpet Number Two – Seismic Blasting Mining
Seismic testing involves blasting the seafloor with high-powered airguns (a kind of powerful horn) every 10 seconds and measuring the echoes with long tubes to map offshore oil and gas reserves. These blasts disturb, injure and kill marine wildlife around the clock for years on end.
Transcript
Seismic blasting Maps below the sea floor in search of fossil
fuels powerful air guns emit blasts louder than an atomic bomb every 10 to 15 seconds 24 hours a day for hundreds of days at a time these intense blasts are damaging to marine life at every level of the
ecosystem seismic blasting can deafen whales and disrupt important behaviour’s including feeding mating and migration the death rates of scallops can quadruple after seismic blasting and Zoo Plankton such as Krill are obliterated from over a kilometre away seismic blasting may also kill up to 30% of rock lobsters by damaging
their sensory organs currently two seismic blasting projects are proposed in our Southeast oceans one is right next to carving
grounds for endangered Southern right Wales off Victoria’s coast and the other is a massive project over endangered blue whale feeding areas and inside a commonwealth Marine Park shockingly companies can commence these destructive activities using a
permit called a special prospecting Authority costing just
$8,250 the permit allows 180 days of blasting including in Marine parks and habitat for endangered species it’s time to end some of the worst seismic blasting in our oceans….

Seismic Testing Is Torturing Marine Life
The ocean is a really dark place very little light gets below 200
metres. A marine animal’s whole world is sound it’s how they talk to each other evade Predators eat mate and love their babies low frequency sound travels really well through water over long
distances without losing important information the ocean is really big so that’s a good thing but humans use this same low frequency sound to look for oil and gas under the ocean floor seismic surveys are one of the loudest sounds we make in the ocean and
those blasts can be heard thousands of miles away scientists have observed marine life freaking out out in response to that noise humpback whales Bone head whales and porpoises bounce from feeding and breeding areas used for Generations Turtles
flee fish swim deeper to avoid the Ruckus submarine animals also kind of give up on life sperm whales eat way less during seismic surveys bone head whales try screaming at first to be
heard over seismic air gun noise and then they go go silent they’re solitary species if they aren’t talking to each other they likely aren’t breeding seismic Airgun noise also hurts marine animals bodies fish and turtle ears are damaged fish brains don’t develop right
scallops grow into deformed adults snow crab ovaries are
bruised and marine mammals get super stressed out chronic stress is known to weaken animal immune system systems and
interfere with making babies dozens of marine scientists have
written to the government out of profound concern over these
impacts the only way to stop marine life from being harmed by seismic surveys is to ban seismic surveys
We note the killing continues
